Plovdiv is Bulgaria’s cultural capital and one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. The Old Town (Stariat Grad) with its cobblestones, colourful Revival-period mansions, and Roman amphitheatre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city was European Capital of Culture 2019 and has since established itself as a major city-break destination.

The best hotels are in or near the Old Town for atmosphere, or in the Centre for modern comforts. The Kapana creative district — converted industrial buildings now housing galleries, craft bars, and boutique cafés — is within walking distance of both.
